DYS - HC/Punk-Legende auf Tour

DYS (w/ members Franz Stahl u.a Gitarrist bei den FOO FIGHTERS, Dave Smalley etc. ) is an American straight edge hardcore band from Boston, Massachusetts who were part of the notorious "Boston Crew" in the 1980s, along with contemporaries such as SSD and Negative FX. The group later expanded their sound, becoming one of the first hardcore bands to veer into heavy metal.

Formed at ground zero of Boston's tough as nails straight edge hardcore scene, DYS rose out of SS Decontrol's Boston Crew, going on to help establish the city as a center of the movement along with Negative FX and Last Rights

Their debut album "Brotherhood" was released by SSD's X-Claim records, recorded at legendary 8-track Boston studio Radiobeat, and produced by Lou Giordano who went on to work with Hüsker Dü. The album cover was designed and drawn by future Mighty, Mighty Bosstone Dickie Barrett, an early fan and friend. "Brotherhood" was classic old-school thrash, with lyrics dedicated to straight edge values and personal politics. Original pressings sell on ebay today for over $200.

Adding a second guitar player, DYS progressed into early Metal cross-over with their self-titled second album. Released on Modern Method (and produced - to the shock of Hardcore purists - by Al Long and Done Foote who were members of electronic dance act "November Group"), DYS was one of the first Hardcore bands to explore modern 24 track recording techniques, and digitial effects as well as de-tuning, multi-part, multi-tempoed songs and other alternative metal influences heard on other period records like Metallica's "Kill 'em All" and the Cro-Mags "Age of Quarrel." Live sound was handled by the now-legendary Mudrock, producer of the Godsmack and Avenged Sevenfold Records.

Taang! Records subsequently released both albums in various formats and collections with current versions still in print and available on iTunes.

Singer Dave Smalley went on to form early emo-pop-hardcore band Dag Nasty with Brian Baker from Minor Threat as well as All, Down by Law and the Sharp Shooters. Bassist Jonathan Anastas helped form second generation hardcore legends Slapshot, writing for - and playing on - their debut record "Back on the Map" as well as touring. Ross Luongo is currently playing in the reformed line-up of Jerry's Kids.

DYS has been featured in the film adaptation and book "American Hardcore," the books "Radio Silence," "Fucked up and Photocopied," "Straight Edge Youth" and "All Ages" among others.

in 2010, DYS reunited for the Gallery East 'xxx All Ages xxx' festival and movie shoot, playing to more than 1,000 young and old fans.

Since that show, the band has played top festivals in the US and Europe and most of the top 25 media markets in America. DYS has also released a series of Digital-only singles on Bridge 9 records and dropped a live album.
