Der sich stetig weiterentwickelnde Künstler BOB MOULD teilt heute seinen brandneuen Song „Sunshine Rock" mit der Ankündigung, dass er am 8. Februar 2019 ein gleichnamiges Album auf Merge Records veröffentlichen wird, mit einer Tournee durch Europa, die ihn im März in drei deutsche Städte führt.

Nach den US-Wahlen 2016 wurde davon ausgegangen, dass Künstler ihre Wut und Angst in zeitbestimmende Werke der Meinungsverschiedenheit angesichts des Autoritarismus verwandeln würden. BOB MOULD nennt sein neues Album jedoch „Sunshine Rock".

Was nicht daran liegt, dass MOULD - dessen Gesicht auf den Mount Rushmore der alternativen Musik gehört - die derzeitige Regierung mag. Seine Entscheidung, „an die Sonne zu schreiben", wie er es beschreibt, kommt von einem persönlicheren Ort - einem Ort namens Berlin, Deutschland, wo er die meiste Zeit der letzten drei Jahre verbracht hat. Hier ließ sich MOULD von den neuen Umgebungen inspirieren.

„Almost four years ago, I made plans for an extended break,” erklärt MOULD. „I started spending time in Berlin in 2015, found an apartment in 2016, and became a resident in 2017. My time in Berlin has been a life changing experience. The winter days are long and dark, but when the sun comes back, all spirits lift."

Diese drei Jahre in Berlin warfen im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes ein neues Licht auf die Alltagsmentalität von BOB MOULD.

„To go from „See A Little Light” (BOBs Autobiografie aus dem Jahre 2011) to the last three albums, two of which were informed by loss of each parent, respectively, at some point I had to put a Post-It note on my work station and say, ‘Try to think about good things.’ Otherwise I could really go down a long, dark hole,” erklärt BOB. „I’m trying to keep things brighter these days as a way to stay alive.”

Das macht „Sunshine Rock" zu einem logischen Produkt des aktuellen Klimas wie jeden wutentbrannten Agit-Rock. Variationen über das Wort „Sonne" tauchen im Laufe der 37 Minuten des Albums 27 Mal in fünf verschiedenen Songs auf. Laut BOB MOULD entwickelte sich das Thema schon sehr früh.

„„Sunshine Rock" was such a bright, optimistic song, and once that came together, I knew that would be the title track, and that really set the tone for the direction of the album,” sagt MOULD. „It was funny, because writing with that as the opener in mind, it was like, ‘This is not Black Sheets of Rain.’”

Das berühmt-berüchtigte 1990er Soloalbum von MOULD („Black Sheets Of Rain") dient nach wie vor als Bezugspunkt: ein Titeltrack, der den Ton für das Album setzt, obwohl es auf „Sunshine Rock" das Gegenteil von „Rain" ist.

Aber BOB MOULD wäre nicht BOB MOULD, wenn es auf „Sunshine Rock" nicht sogar noch dunklere Momente gäbe. „Lost Faith", zum Beispiel, lässt ihn leise klagen, „I’ve lost faith in everything / Everything, everything.” Der BOB MOULD von 1990 hätte sich vielleicht noch in diesem Gefühl gesuhlt, aber der BOB MOULD von 2018 springt in einen peppigen, bombastischen Chor, wo er singt, „Really gotta stop this now, this is your / Last chance to turn around, I know we / All lose faith from time to time, you / Better find your way back home.”

Diese kathartischen Momente in „Lost Faith" rücken ein überraschendes Element von „Sunshine Rock" in den Vordergrund: MOULDs rohester Gesang seit seinen Stimmband strapazierenden Tagen in HÜSKER DÜ. Es begann, als MOULD, Band-Drummer Jon Wurster und Bassist Jason Narducy mit MOULDs langjährigem Ingenieur Beau Sorenson eine Extra-Session im Studio hatten. Sie entschieden sich mit „Send Me A Postcard” für ein Cover von SHOCKING BLUES, und MOULD entschied sich, gleich dort den Gesang aufzunehmen.

„This was the first real vocal take during the session. I walked to the mic, not knowing how I would sing these words. Three minutes later, I went back into the control room and everyone was like, ’What the fuck, that was wild!’ I was like, ‘Yeah, it’s pretty good!’ That was the only take, and that’s what you hear on the album. After that moment, I learned to let go and be more spontaneous with my vocals. Because of that, there’s way more emotion on this album. Perhaps I was ironing some of that out in the past by double- and triple-tracking vocals, hoping for some perfect pop result.”

Die Rohheit des Gesangs werden durch die Streicher ausgeglichen, die in fünf Songs vorkommen. Obwohl MOULD auch auf früheren Alben schon mit kleiner Streicherbegleitung experimentiert hat, integriert er auf „Sunshine Rock" ambitioniert gleich ein 18-köpfiges Orchester.

„I had this idea as we were right up on recording, ‘Why not take some of these extra melodies that I’ve got kicking around and build them all into string arrangements?’” Mould says. “I like really big, dense chordal structures and rhythm guitars, those layers that come at you. This time, I was just trying to be mindful of adding more melody.”

Das alles kulminiert in MOULDs eingängigstes und packendstes Album seit „Copper Blue", dem gefeierten Debüt seines Trios SUGAR von 1992. Damals trugen MOULDs Arbeiten in HÜSKER DÜ, als Solokünstler und in SUGAR dazu bei, den Sound des Gitarrenrocks im alternativen Zeitalter zu definieren. „Sunshine Rock" findet ihn wieder, wie er es für eine Ära tut, die angeblich Rock-Musik meidet.

„I’ve heard this thing about ‘guitars are dead’ at least five times, and they always seem to come back,” sagt er. „For better or worse, this is what I do. I think there’s a lot of people trying to aspire to make great albums. That’s really what this is about: trying to make great rock albums for people because there’s not that many anymore.”

Vielleicht ist an dem Klischee, dass große Kunst aus großer Unzufriedenheit entsteht, tatsächlich was dran, aber wer hätte gedacht, dass es „Sunshine Rock" heißen würde?

„„Sunshine Rock" is one helluva way to wrap up the busiest decade of my career,” sagt BOB. „The autobiography, the Disney Hall tribute show, reissues of several albums from my catalog, three current rock band albums, several world tours, and now this new album — I’m humbled and grateful to still be making new music while celebrating my lifetime songbook.”

„Sunshine Rock" folgt der Veröffentlichung von „Patch The Sky" (2016), ebenfalls auf Merge Records, die vom ROLLING STONE bezeichnet wurde als „conjuring the ecstatic rage of his earlier bands for a grim new era” und als „tight, sharp musings on aging, fizzled relationships and death that are melodic enough to sound like songs of victory” von der NEW YORK TIMES. „Patch The Sky" schloss eine Trilogie ab, zu der auch die Vorgänger „Beauty & Ruin" (2014) und „Silver Age" (2012) gehörten.
